The Close Up Foundation is the nation’s largest non-profit and non-partisan citizenship education organization. Since 1971, Close Up has worked with students and educators across the country to promote active citizenship. For middle school students the adventure is exciting. At the core of the middle school programs lives the question, “What can we learn from history to help us become effective citizens today?” Students benefit from Close Up’s robust curriculum and spend time interacting with their peers from across the country as they visit D.C.’s famous sites including Capitol Hill, the National Archives, DC’s Smithsonian Museums, Arlington Cemetery, and more.
Students will have the opportunity to:
This trip is more than a sight-seeing trip. Students will not only see the sites, but will also engage in personal and group activities and reflection regarding the historical significance of what they see. Close-Up's highly trained and professional educators lead students through journaling activities, small and large group discussions, scavenger hunts for information, and a mock Congress. Students engage with historians and politicians, explore the meaning of personal responsibility and civic duty, and meet other students from around the country to learn what life is like in other areas of the United States. All who attend will benefit, and this is a perfect trip for the GATE learner who seeks both experience and intellectual challenge.
Currently 9 members of Congress and 2 U.S. Cabinet members are Close-Up alumni.
